Why fistula needle choice matters

Cannulation is the most repeated clinical procedure in a dialysis patient's week. Needle design directly affects patient comfort, fistula longevity, and nurse confidence.

Ultra-Thin Wall Design

Thinner needle walls mean a larger internal bore for the same external gauge — allowing higher blood flow rates with less pressure drop across the needle.

Siliconized Bevel

The bevel is coated with a medical-grade silicone layer that reduces friction during vessel puncture — less trauma to the fistula wall, less discomfort for the patient.

Stable Wing Design

Both fixed-wing and rotating-wing options give nurses a secure taping point that holds the needle steady through 4-hour sessions.

Which gauge should you order?

Gauge selection is prescribed by the dialysis team — this is a general guide, not a clinical recommendation.

G15
Larger bore · Higher flow

Used for mature fistulas and higher prescribed blood flow rates. Larger internal bore allows efficient flow but slightly greater puncture trauma.

G16
Most commonly used

The standard choice for routine hemodialysis across most adult patients. Balanced needle bore for flow rate and patient comfort.

G17
Smaller bore · Newer fistulas

Preferred for newer fistulas, smaller veins, and patients who experience discomfort at larger gauges. Lower flow rate capacity.

Procurement FAQ

Which gauge should I use — G15, G16 or G17?

Gauge determines needle bore size and blood flow rate. G15 (larger bore) is used for higher flow rates and mature fistulas. G16 is the most common gauge — balanced flow and comfort. G17 (smaller bore) is preferred for newer fistulas, smaller veins, or patients who experience discomfort. The dialysis team selects gauge per patient.

Fixed wing vs rotating wing — which should I order?

Fixed wing needles have the plastic wing at a set angle, offering greater stability once taped. Rotating wing needles allow the wing to be repositioned after insertion, useful when fistula angle varies or for difficult cannulations. Most units stock both.

Are the needles sterile?

Yes. Every fistula needle is EO gas sterilized and individually packaged. They are single-use only and must never be reused.

Do you sell needles in pairs or singles?

We price per pair — one arterial and one venous needle per pack, since a standard dialysis session uses both. Bulk pricing applies to orders above 200 pairs.

Do you supply safety-engineered variants with guards?

Yes — we can source safety-guarded variants on request. Tell us your preference in the quote form and we'll confirm availability and price.
