Tape Selection

There is no single "surgical tape"

Different clinical tasks need different tapes. Fixing a bloodline needs tape that holds under tension; covering a cannulation site needs tape that comes off gently; dressing a fragile elderly patient's skin needs the mildest adhesive available. Kibellan stocks the range — you can order by type, not just "surgical tape".

Four tape types — each for a different job

Most dialysis units stock 2–3 of these. Hospital wards often stock all four.

Paper Tape

Hypoallergenic. Gentle removal. For fragile or sensitive skin — elderly patients, long-term dialysis patients with fragile forearm skin.

Best for
Skin-friendly cannulation site coverage

Silk Tape

The clinical standard. Secure fixation with clean removal. Comfortable on most skin types.

Best for
Dressing fixation, general ward use

Cloth Tape

Heavy-duty. High-tack adhesive. Holds under tension and moisture. Stronger grip than silk or paper.

Best for
Bloodline tubing fixation, high-tension setups

Transparent Tape

See-through backing allows visual monitoring of the wound site without removing the dressing. Water-resistant.

Best for
Cannulation sites needing monitoring

Skin integrity in long-term dialysis

Dialysis patients have tape applied to the same small area of forearm skin 2–3 times a week, indefinitely. That's thousands of applications over a patient's lifetime on dialysis.

MARSI Risk

Medical Adhesive-Related Skin Injury (MARSI) is a real clinical concern in dialysis — repetitive tape use on fragile skin causes tears, irritation and infection risk. Using the gentlest appropriate tape reduces this.

Moisture & Sweat

Kenya's warm climate and dialysis units' humidity mean tapes need moisture resistance to hold through a 4-hour session. Cloth and transparent tapes perform better here than paper tape.

Tension Load

Bloodline tubing pulls on the fixation point for the whole session. Cloth tape holds better than paper tape under sustained tension — reducing the risk of accidental needle dislodgement.

Procurement FAQ

What types of surgical tape are available?

We supply four main types: paper tape (hypoallergenic, gentle, for sensitive skin), silk tape (secure fixation with clean removal, standard clinical use), cloth tape (heavy-duty for tubing fixation and high-tension applications), and transparent tape (allows visual wound monitoring without removal). Most dialysis units stock at least two or three of these for different purposes.

Which tape should a dialysis unit stock?

Most units stock paper tape for sensitive-skin patients, silk or cloth tape for securing bloodline tubing, and transparent tape for cannulation site coverage where wound visibility is important. A mixed-tape order reduces the risk of running short of a specific type mid-week.

Why is tape choice important in dialysis?

Dialysis patients have tape applied to the same small area of skin 2–3 times per week, indefinitely. Regular use of an inappropriate adhesive can cause skin breakdown, allergic contact dermatitis, or Medical Adhesive-Related Skin Injury (MARSI). Choosing the right tape preserves the patient's skin integrity over years of treatment.

Is medical tape different from ordinary adhesive tape?

Yes. Medical surgical tapes use adhesives designed for skin contact — breathable, hypoallergenic, and formulated for clean removal without damaging the skin. Ordinary hardware-store adhesive tape is not manufactured to those standards and should never be used for wound dressing fixation, bloodline fixation, or any patient-contact application.

Can I order mixed types in one shipment?

Yes. Institutional customers typically order a mix — for example, 20 rolls of paper tape, 30 rolls of silk tape and 10 rolls of transparent tape per order. Tell us the mix you need in the quote form and we'll prepare a single shipment with consolidated pricing.

What sizes are available?

Standard roll widths for dialysis use are 1.25cm, 2.5cm and 5cm. The narrower widths are used for cannulation site coverage and small dressing fixation; wider widths for securing bloodline tubing and larger dressings. Tell us your width preference per type in the enquiry.
